Newsletter 05-2020

Dear {CONTACT.FULLNAME},

The corona virus has a huge impact on our lives. We spend a lot of time at home, working at home, meetings via video calling with the children on our lap. Family and work are mixed up and that requires an enormous adjustment to our lives. However, the current time also provides reflection. Looking at the influence of our current industry and what this does to the environment makes people think. How can we make our world more sustainable?

Together we can create the future of tomorrow.

Partnership 01RG

Since April 2020, Nulenergie has become an official partner of ATEPS. 01RG or Nulenergie is an independent service provider for the private, business and large business market.

Geert van Gorp and Marcel Timmermans founded 01RG by joining forces in the field of energy advice, installation technology and construction.

Energy advice, sun panels and energy storage. Everything is possible. With their vision, both men have the energy to unburden their customers as much as possible according to their wishes and needs.

Because Nulenergie works together with a large number of suppliers, manufacturers, installers and contractors, they can always offer a custom-made solution.

Recent project

E-Unit

One of our most recent project was at E-Unit in Arnhem (NL). It's a complete new-energy and CO2 neutral business park where Energy Storage, Heat-pumps, Ice cellars and other technologies are combined into a new concept. E-unit is the first energy ++++ project in the Netherlands.

ESS 1MW/1MWh

We are very proud that we were the supplier of a 1MW/1MWh containerised system.

Our vision to 2nd hand batteries

History

Did you know that the first electric car was developed early in the nineteenth century. The Groningen professor Stratingh has produced an electric "car" already in 1835. It weighs only three kilos, can transport one and a half kilos and drives around twenty minutes. Electric transport "cars" came fifty years later. But a large part of these producers disappeared again with the arrival of the combustion engine.

With the advent of the lithium-ion battery in the early twenty-first century, the electric car came back alive.

We drive electric for a while now. And this means that lithium batteries also need to be replaced. And companies experiment with old, 2nd hand batteries that come from electric vehicles, busses and trucks to reduce the cost of battery storage.

Risk factors:

Batteries used in vehicles have a relatively easy life compared to batteries that are used in Energy Storage Systems.

In an ESS the full power can continue during a much longer period of time, both during charge and discharge, something needed for consistent action on the power exchange or secondary power applications. The number of cells needed for a 1MW system is very high and can run into the thousands. When new, each of these cells have undergone strict performance testing before being assembled into a battery pack.

For a large scale ESS, multiple packs need to be connected together whereby each pack should be within 1% of the specifications. Matching these cells and packs so they have equal performance requires extensive testing over the full spectrum of use.

Does this mean we can't use 2nd hand batteries?

No certainly not. Use of these batteries in smaller applications such as the electrification of small boats used for recreational purposes or home storage applications will give the new owner many years of good use. The frequency of use is limited and the charge and discharge profiles are much less aggressive, finding matching cells is easier due to the smaller numbers and therefore the feasibility of such application to become successful is much higher.

Latest developments

Risk management of lithium-ion energy carriers

In the past year, Ateps and more than 60 other parties from the energy storage sector have been closely involved in the realization of the circular risk management of lithium-ion energy carriers. Storing energy in the form of electricity is becoming an essential part of a sustainability.

The demand for energy storage is increasing and therefor it's important to create standardization.

Several Sustainable energy projects are still unable to proceed due to a shortage of the electricity grid. There are already bottlenecks because of the increasing (peak) demand caused by consumers. Because of the new laws and regulations that have been amended only gas-free homes must be built.

Due to the unclear position of storage in the laws and regulations (storage is both a "generator" and "user"), storage is charged with double energy tax, adverse effects of the network fees system and the consequences of the netting arrangement.

Due to a lack of storage capacity more CO2 is emitted than necessary.

There are days when too many sustainable energy gets generated and too less systems that can store green energy. Wind and solar energy must be switched off (so-called curtailment). Than the energy must become offset with fossil energy sources. By stimulating the deployment of small and large-scale storage curtailment will be prevented.

The conclusion is that the market needs clear guidelines and standards and we intent to have this available in 2021. With this we get the energy transition in the Netherlands on track and capitalize on international growth opportunities.
